Louisiana Black Bears at the Franklin Office and at the Cypremort House
Did You Know There are Louisiana Black Bears
Near the JMB Home Office, and Near the Cypremort House?
Story written by Cindy Cangiolosi as told by Debi Lauret, JMB Shareholder Liason

Henry "Hank" Atkins, USDA, with the Momma Bear
It was a cold, October morning in 2019, when a nearby neighbor noticed a Louisiana Black Bear dangling from a tree located in the backyard of the JMB Corporate Headquarters. Knowing the LA Black Bear is a protected species, and can be, potentially, dangerous, the Franklin Police Department was immediately contacted by the neighbor. Meanwhile, Debi Lauret notified U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Responding to the call was Henry "Hank" Atkins, a biologist with USFWS (United States Fish and Wildlife Service), who saw the bear was located rather high up the tree. This would require, safely, luring the bear down for sedation and relocation. Placing fresh, hot doughnuts should do, so.
Carefully, placing a red stretcher-like trap for capture and transport under the tree with the delectable doughnuts in view, Hank and the JMB staff, patiently, waited from a safe distance.
After a couple hours, the LA Black Bear began to disembark from the tree for the doughnuts. Then, Hank fired his dart gun to sedate the bear.
When the medication took place, Hank was able to evaluate the bear's physiological condition, and noted it was a pregnant, female in great condition. She was transported to a safe area.
Likewise, should you visit or stay at the Cypremort House, be aware of your surroundings as there have been several sightings of the LA Black Bear, alligators, bobcats, and wild hogs on the property. Should you see any wildlife, do not approach it or attempt to feed it. Immediately, contact law enforcement, if necessary, and let Debi Lauret know, too.
