Henry Isidore Alysius Burguières, Sr.
November 2, 1887 - June 18, 1938
Henry I. A. Burguières was educated at the Old College of the Immaculate Conception and later at Spring Hill College. For over 27 years, from 1911 to his death in 1938, he was secretary and director of The J. M. Burguières Co., Limited. After his marriage to Sara "Sallie" Hyams Trufant, he lived at North Bend Plantation in St. Mary Parish where he raised his family and was overseer of field operations. In 1926, he moved to the uptown section of New Orleans and worked with his father-in-law, Samuel A. Trufant, in the stock and bond business. After a long illness, Henry died at the age of 51 in 1938. Though his life was short, according to the Times Picayune, Henry was "well-known in business and social circles in New Orleans and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast."
Sara "Sallie" Hyams Trufant
May 1, 1890 - November 24, 1972
She was known as "Mummy" to her children and grandchildren but was called Sara or Sallie by her friends. According to her children and grandchildren, she and Henry met while they were touring Europe and were married on their return. Her wedding dress came from Paris. She was known for her lavish spending and shopping habits. Her family was wealthy, so that is where much of her money probably came from. According to stories handed down, she went back to Europe after the birth of each of her children. Prior to 1926 when she moved to New Orleans with her husband Henry, she did the majority of her shopping in New Orleans. On those trips, she left her children with her mother, Bertha Alice Todd Trufant, who lived in the Garden District.
When Henry and Sallie moved to New Orleans in 1926 from North Bend, they lived uptown at 1136 Eleonore Street, on the corner of Perrier. Her father was Samuel Adams Trufant, who was born on November 2, 1853, and died on January 13, 1936, at the age of 83. He was a stock and bond broker. In New Orleans, Mr. Trufant was a well-known businessman, a member of the stock exchange who was prominent in social and church activities. He was also a member of the Boston Club of New Orleans.
Mummy hosted wonderful family gatherings at her home on Eleonore Street. Both Christmas and Easter events were "command performances" for every child, spouse and grandchild. She is remembered for being a great southern lady and for having an unhurried ease about herself. Interestingly, she spoke little of her own family. She had one brother, Samuel A. Trufant, Jr., who was a lawyer. After the Depression, she and her oldest daughter, Marie Alice, took care of her husband Henry, who was ill prior to his death on June 18, 1938, at 51 years of age. She always kept a room ready at her home on Eleonore Street for Uncle Jules when he came in from the country. In the last years of her life, she sold her home and moved to Mason Hospitalet on Royal Street in the French Quarter. She remained there until her death on November 24, 1972. She is buried in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans in the S. A. Trufant tomb.
