Jean Louis Baptiste Burguières

Jean Louis Baptiste Burguières was born in Paris in 1763. Records confirm his parents were Joseph Antoine Burguières and Guillemette Forest. Jean married Catherine Michelle Pauline Lallemand on September 14, 1802. Her birth date is recorded as February 23, 1785 in Paris, France. Her parents were Pierre Jean Lallemand and Lucie Cauchois. She was in her late teens at the time of her marriage. Jean was 39 years old. Jean and Catherine were blessed with four sons: Pierre Guillaume Edouardo Burguières, Eugène Denis Burguières, Edouard Edmond Burguières, and Philippe Julien Burguières.
Their first son, Edouardo Burguières, was born on March 19, 1803 in Paris. Some time before 1836, he married Charlotte Eléanor Barbier and they lived in Beaucourt (then in Haut-Rhin). Edouard and Charlotte had no children.
The second son, Eugène Denis Burguières, from whom our family line descends, was born on June 19, 1804. (Information about Eugène Denis Burguières may be found under his biography. The third son, Edouard Edmond Burguières, was born on February 3, 1814. Edouard received his doctorate from Faculté de Medécine de Paris in 1841, and served as a physician in the French army, accompanying Ferdinand de Lesseps in providing medical care for the builders of the Suez Canal. For his service during a cholera epidemic, Dr. Burguières received medals and citations of honor from France, Belgium, Italy, Tunis, the Ottoman Empire, Sweden, Norway, Austria, and Germany. Dr. Burguières' grandchildren had no children of their own. Dr. Burguières grandson-in-law, Dr. Luigi Oltolina and his wife, Emma Marie Mathilde Burguières Oltolina, had kept in touch with Emma's cousins, Ernest A. and Jules M. Burguières, Jr., in the United States. At the conclusion of World War II, Dr. Luigi Oltolina contacted Ernest A. Burguières, Emma's second cousin, to give him the medals. An Air Passenger Manifest for the U.S. Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service dated November 5, 1946 shows Dr. Oltolina arrived on an American Overseas Airline (AOA) flight from Stockholm to New York. He is listed as a 67 year-old manufacturer from Asso, Como, Italy. He then made his way to New Orleans where he presented the medals and the chain of matching miniatures to Ernest A. Burguières. Robin Burguières Bristow, daughter of Ernest, remembers her mother, Isabella, having a dinner party to welcome him. During this trip, Dr. Oltolina also traveled from New Orleans to Cypremort Plantation with Jules M. Burguières, Jr. The medals were stored in Ernest's safe at his home on 5908 Garfield Avenue in New Orleans until his death in May 1959.
The fourth son, Philippe Julien Burguières, was born on May 19, 1816, a year after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo and when Jean Louis was 53 years old. He immigrated to England in July 1838 where he became a professor of languages. He married three times and died on November 13, 1897.
